Best Low Purine Foods For Dalmatians

Purines are a type of protein that's commonly found in some meats like pork, veal, duck, venison, game meats, livers and organs, some seafoods such as sardines, herring and haddock.

So if your a new Dal owner with an HUA puppy, be prepared to start spending more time reading ingredient labels for food in high purine.

Since Dalmatians have a genetic predisposition to forming stones due to their unique liver and kidney chemistry, high purine diets can lead to urinary crystals. Urethral obstruction isn't only painful but can also be life threatening. This issue more commonly effects males more then females.

High purines can cause liver disease, Endocrine and metabolic conditions such as diabetes or even hypertension. Most dal owners opt for chicken, lamb, white fish, or turkey as a preferred meat diet.

Best Dog Foods I've Found

I read once that the first five ingredients are the most important. So spending 15 minutes in the Walmart looking at ingredients and comparing prices and 20 minutes in PetSmart reading ingredients and comparing prices, I came to the conclusion, the better ingredients are more expensive. Well worth your pets health. Spending the extra money on food could save you a couple thousand at the vet.

One thing I found irritating is the dog food you see in commercials or being advertised on store windows or in reviews like Purina Pro Plan or Rachel Ray, have the worst ingredients for Dalmatians. I know not everyone has Dalmatians and yes those foods are high in protein but the ingredients are trash and the prices are ridiculous when you can get a bigger bag with better ingredients for $5-$10 more and sleep sound at night knowing you don't have to wake up to your dog becoming obese with age or developing urinary or kidney stones or any other medical issue caused by high protein meats. Just my opinion. I will be doing a separate blog going into more detail about the meats they put in pet food. Here is a list of Dog Food I found very appropriate for Dalmatians, remember, you will never find that perfect dog food but the better the low purine ingredients the better the health of your dog! So hopefully this will save you some time at the store.
